Five key virtual-machine management questions

Virtual machines are hot, and their proliferation is spinning out of control. Why the virtual-machine rush? Easy: The "one operating system, one hardware host" rule is passé now that virtual-machine software lets companies stretch their hardware resources as far as their CPU capacity can take them.

Hoover no stranger to water

Hoover's love of water can be traced even further back to childhood vacations at Cape Cod. Those days created a penchant for seafood, which lead to the occasional trip east for fried clams.

The new chamber director is not naive enough to think Kent could spawn the type of economic activity downtown Peninsula enjoys during summer months. But, as bike trails come together in Kent, it's obvious both communities share some amenities. And Kent has the promise of canoe and kayak activity, whereas Peninsula relies heavily on bicycle traffic.

"I think it's a piece," Hoover said of the proposed white water park. "It's not going to be the one thing. The challenge with something like that is it's very seasonal."

The chamber board of directors voted Thursday to appoint Hoover to take over for former director Dan Smith.

GM offer reflects severity of threat from Delphi troubles

As it attempts to climb back from a $39 billion loss in 2007, GM already faces a slumping U.S. market for new vehicles and deepening economic uncertainty that threatens to complicate its effort to get thousands of workers to accept buyout offers now on the table for 74,000 UAW-represented employees.

But it has been the turmoil in the credit markets touched off by the subprime mortgage crisis that has threatened to delay GM's effort to pull clear of Delphi.

When GM spun the parts company off in 1999, it retained some responsibility for retirees' health care and other benefits for the former unit's unionized hourly workers if Delphi was unable to provide them. It also relies on the supplier for a range of parts it needs to keep its own factories running.

But the loan market's capacity to absorb Delphi's $6.1 billion exit financing deal and others like it has proved extremely limited.

Toothless Serb syndrome

Finally a well thought out article amongst all the reactionary posts that circulate this topic. Also a glorious return to form to the reasoned posts I was used to when this was a weekly diary. Please more like this or better yet go back to the diary. Pretty please.

A total triumph and an utter defeat

The Greens also got what they wanted when Mr Swinney announced an extra £4 million for bus operators to help keep fares down and encourage greater use of public transport. This was enough to persuade the two Green MSPs to abstain on the Budget – the vital, last piece in the jigsaw, giving the SNP the numbers necessary to get the package through. These final concessions came on top of earlier moves to get the Tories and Greens on board, including an extra £10 million for an additional 300 police officers and £4 million more to fight climate change. The Tories were derided by Labour and Liberal Democrat MSPs for helping the SNP.Tavish Scott, the Liberal Democrats' finance spokesman, described the settlement as a "Nat-Con" budget. He labelled Mr Salmond's threat to resign if the Budget had not been passed as "a landmark strop".Iain Gray, for Labour, said the Budget deal was nothing more than a "tartan Tory tango", and he also derided Mr Salmond's threats to quit."The unedifying pantomime of a First Minister threatening resignation from behind the safety of deals already done is an act of vacuous bravado which sums up his government's approach to this whole process," he saidBut Annabel Goldie, the Scottish Tory leader, was delighted with her party's achievements.

Today, Dick Cheney was dispatched to the friendly confines of the American Enterprise Institute to try to reverse the momentum for troop pullouts from Iraq. "A precipitous withdrawal from Iraq would be a victory for the terrorists, an invitation to further violence against free nations, and a terrible blow to the future security of the United States of America." The vice president argued against "self-defeating" pessimism in America and pushed back against the president's critics who say Bush manipulated prewar intelligence. Cheney's message was the one he has delivered often in the last five years: The White House isn't budging.

In a traditional political marriage, the vice president would be too nervous about his political future to give such a full-throated endorsement of unpopular policies and kiss-offs to politicians in both parties.

STAR AND BUC WILD RETURN TO NY AIRWAVES!

That shit is gonna be hell for them. It's never fun to lose a family member, especially a young man who was doing positive things.

I can't imagine not only what his family feels like, but his teammates as well. I don't know how they are going to play a game on Sunday. .
