PM denies spending will push up rates
Prime Minister John Howard denies his massive $9 billion splurge on election promises will push up inflation and interest rates. Moments before the Coalition's election launch yesterday, the Reserve Bank of Australia sounded an official warning on inflation, which it predicted would not drop below 3 per cent before 2009. The bank said public spending and household consumption were key drivers of inflation that could lead to further interest rate hikes. But Mr Howard today insisted his election splurge was responsible and would not add to inflation. He acknowledged higher inflation put upward pressure on interest rates but said factors such as drought and high oil prices, not government spending on tax cuts, were to blame for inflationary pressures in the economy.
Florida park an island of relaxation to itself
The tops of the handful of graves were adorned with crosses made of seashells, and live oak, pines, and shells bordered the area. (The Calusa Indians lived in this area for centuries before being driven out in the early 1700s.) Our favorite sunset spot was a lagoon shielded from the shoreline breeze and full of jumping fish and diving birds. One resident alligator keeps swimmers away. We also joined other stooped, eagle-eyed shell collectors at the beach. (The park service has put up a shell identification board, but unfortunately runs no interpretive programs.) "Everyone talks about shelling in Sanibel, but these are the best shells I've ever seen because they're so big," said Diane DeQuinzio of Tega Cay, S.C., who encouraged admirers to take specimens from her bounty. For a different vantage point, kayaking is a great way to explore the island, which is on the route of the Great Calusa Blueway water trail.

Pamper youself in Cairns and Port Douglas
TO spa or not to spa: that's hardly a real dilemma when it comes to a northern Queensland resort holiday. A rub, scrub, wrap or roll is as much part of the getaway menu these days as a sit on the beach (lathered in sunblock and under straw hats so wide they make sombreros look like side plates) and a swim in the sea. Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef At Mirvac's Cairns International Hotel, a spacious city property with a refurb planned, a super $2.5 million spa has opened on level two with 10 treatment rooms, including a couples' salon and a Vichy shower room, and a relaxation area with ottomans, big saucer chairs, wafting curtains and maidens bearing trays of herbal teas and sliced fruit. It's very stylish indeed and a signal that Mirvac is serious about an overall hotel upgrade here.

All the bodies were covered of dark powder so to look black, but were not burnt. Clothes and hair were not damaged or burnt." Samples from the skin of six corpses were analyzed for histology in two independent laboratories. The results revealed no altered elements in the skin and derma and no sign of burns. All samples showed particles of dark color covering the skin, histologically staining for iron. Electron microscope scans showed the presence of phosphorous, iron and magnesium at below the normal level of detection. Analysis of the dark refractive material layered over the skin of one victim showed it contained mainly carbon and oxygen, and lesser amounts of iron, silicon and calcium. Some of these elements are used in particle form as fuel additives to boost the blast of thermobaric bombs or grenades.
