Ballmer spearheading KeyArena bid, but Legislature balking
Four prominent Seattle business leaders, including Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, are making their pitch to renovate KeyArena and keep the Sonics in Seattle. But the bid is being met with resistance in the state Legislature, where some lawmakers say it's too late in this year's session to push through such a proposal. .
Colombian rebels free four hostages
The four hostages were freed in the same region of Guaviare state where the FARC released two other politicians on Jan. 10: Clara Rojas and Consuelo Gonzalez. Also released Wednesday were former Rep. Orlando Beltran and former Sen. Luis Eladio Perez. All were said to be ailing — Polanco with thyroid problems, Gechem with heart, back and ulcer problems. "You've saved us practically from death," Beltran said in the video, thanking Chavez. Two of Polanco's three sons were kidnapped together with her and later released in 2004 after a ransom was paid. Her husband was later murdered, allegedly by the FARC. As she held the flowers in the video, she said: "I will lay these flowers at my husband's tomb, and another stem for each one of my sons." Her youngest son, Daniel Polanco, who was 11 when Polanco was kidnapped, told Colombia's Caracol radio before the release that he and his brothers bought their mother flowers, balloons, two or three changes of clothes and cosmetics "so she can be pretty." The helicopters apparently spent about two hours on the ground at the pickup location in Colombia.
Foundation named for crash victim donates car seats
WAILUKU — The Will Smith Foundation, named in honor of an 8-year-old car crash victim, presented its first gift of 10 booster seats valued at approximately $400. An attempt to donate a $14,000 personal watercraft to the County of Maui remains on hold while approvals are sought. The gift of booster seats represents an initial fulfillment of a pledge by part-time Maui resident Susan Moulton to return to the island to make something positive of her son's death. According to police, Will Smith was a passenger in a car driven by Moulton on June 3 when they were struck by an oncoming car near the Ukumehame Wayside Park. The second vehicle was driven by a woman who lost control of her vehicle, veered off the roadway, then went into the opposite lane of traffic. Criminal charges have not been filed in the case, which remains under investigation.
Texas Holdem: Provisionals, Delegates, One-Party Counties Hold Back ...
But perhaps the most astonishing aspect of the Texas primary is that despite the popular vote going for Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, Texas delegates are voting for Barack Obama. Provisionalizing Voters Those whose names do not appear on voter rolls are provided a provisional ballot which will later be counted if the voter can prove she is legally allowed to vote. Party operatives use voter rolls to disenfranchise targeted segments of society. We saw this in Florida in 2000 from Greg Palast’s exposė. With the advent of statewide, computerized databases, the job of vote suppression becomes child’s play. Electronic "glitches," fluctuations in humidity, and power outages can also remove huge portions from computerized rolls, or refuse to recognize valid voters based on name or street hyphenation.
