I think Stimson is showing some good potentual. A bit late to do any thing this season but next season, providing there are the funds available, we could be in with a shout of the top six.

Rallies could make the difference in a close race

Barack Obama's or Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign, putting South Texas and the Hispanic vote squarely in the spotlight. The candidates and their high-profile supporters have been criss-crossing the Rio Grande Valley as well.

But how well do these whistlestops translate to votes? How much does an undecided voter really learn about the candidates?

Corpus Christi resident Annika Gunning, 24, decided she wouldn't learn much, so she didn't go to either candidate's rally (though she watched Obama's on television).

"I feel like I need to research what they're all about," said Gunning, who works at the consulting firm Olivarri & Associates. "I don't know how much you learn at a rally except to cheer them on."

Charlton McIlwain, a political communication specialist at New York University, agreed that issues aren't the most important part of the campaign stops.

Nufarm acquires herbicide companies

He will remain Nufarm's largest shareholder, saying the proceeds from the sale of his shares would be used to fund an expansion of his family's wine business.

In Australia, Nufarm sales in December and January were very strong, after improved seasons in NSW and Queensland boosted confidence among farmers.

Nufarm shares were in a trading halt yesterday, having last traded at $16.10. AAP

Mailbag: Manchester United: No Reward for Ferguson’s Loyalty and ...

Remember, he put Saha ahead of Ruud in the Carling Cup final a few years back because Louis started every Carling Cup game and deserved his place, knowing that it would open the door for Ruud to leave. He does it when he believes it is good for the team. Like when he let Beckham go...same with Keane, who I'd like to add retired shortly after leaving due to injury. This is a business, you cant afford slip ups, players know the score and should understand they cant be repaid for loyalty if it would have a negative affect on the teams performance. I bet you think that Gary Neville should play in the last few games of the season if he his fit, just because hes our captain and has been through a loteven though it may mess up what we have been working on all season!!

I trust Ferguson's judgement, you should too.

Something to say cheese about

In Burgundy, which reminded them of the flat land of their own region, they met women producing cheese in small thimble shapes. "These gals made a delicious boutons de culotte - literally trouser buttons," says Hanley, for serving as a nibble before dinner with sparkling wines or cocktails. Though the traditional boutons de culotte is made from goat's milk, the women were using Holsteins crossed with Ayrshires, similar to the Santoses' herd. Hanley, a former golf course consultant who still speaks with the honeyed accents of her native Alabama, says at first she didn't realize they were onto something. But Karl Santos, she says, knew right away. "We thought bite-size [cheeses] would be a niche," he says.

Back home, the work began. The brothers had sold their life insurance policies and Hanley and her husband, Leo Brooks, put in money to raise the $150,000 they needed to begin.

Do the Patriots need to run more to win it all?

The postseason brackets should reward the teams that perform best, and the best Super Bowl pairing -- Indianapolis versus New England -- should at least be possible when the countdown begins. The NFL could retain conference and division structure for the purpose of organizing regular-season play, then make the playoffs a 12-team seeded tourney. Performance would be rewarded, and pairings would be better. What's not to like?

In leaguewide news, although the best part now begins -- the games an entire season of nonsense has built up to -- paradoxically, interest declines at this point in each NFL season. Only 12 of 32 teams remain standing, which means two-thirds of the fan bases are already dreaming of September 2008. In the regular season, even if your team stinks, you can always hope it'll have a good game the next week.

Scotland's prison population has reached an all-time high, according ...

I am determined to turn around high reoffending rates and, although some progress has been made in dealing with the specific needs of female offenders, more can be done.

"The mandatory use of supervised attendance orders for fine defaulters is designed to remove up to 3000 receptions per year of fine defaulters to our prisons, including those who might otherwise have been sent to Cornton Vale." He added: "There is clearly something perverse if less people are offending and more people are going to jail."

In one government-backed approach, a pilot scheme which uses former prisoners as mentors to inmates being released from jail has claimed success in placing people in work or training.

The Wise Group, the charity which runs the Routes Out of Prison pilot, has achieved twice as many work or training placements as is usual, according to data seen by The Herald.

To keep track, the Sheriff's Office measures crime in a 1,000-foot circle around the park, part of which jumps Interstate 10 and includes McDuff Avenue.

The No. 1 goal, reducing violent crime, is on the right track. There were 22 incidents in 2007 - about half the number in 2004 before PAL came to the neighborhood. At the same time, though, property crime has been on the rise - up about a third since 2004, despite an initial drop in 2005.

The city committed resources, too, sweeping the area with code enforcement officers. So far, 100 homes have been condemned, and there's more than six times the number of active code cases today compared with 2004.

Quality of life

While the property crime numbers are troubling, Assistant Chief Bobby Deal, who runs PAL, said the priority has to be reducing violent crime.

10 Tips: Rent a car without breaking the bank

You stand to get the upgrade anyway for the economy price.

5. Check for restrictions on where you can take the car. Planning to drive across state lines? Make sure that's going to be OK before you lock in your rental deal. Some rental car companies' “unlimited mileage" rates don't include certain states, and you could get walloped with an unexpectedly high bill unless you're aware of the restrictions ahead of time.

6. You rarely need that extra insurance. Rental agencies often urge renters to spend additional money per day on collision damage waivers and other insurance coverage. Review your auto insurance policy and credit-card agreements; you're almost certainly covered already. The one exception you might want to consider is “loss of use" coverage, which covers the time the rental agency may need to spend having the car repaired if you get into an accident.
