December Slump In Vehicle Sales Augurs Ill for '08

See Corrections & Amplifications item below.

The auto industry's troubles, once centered on Detroit, are spreading to other manufacturers amid a slump in U.S. vehicle sales that is likely to turn 2008 into the weakest year in at least a decade.

The industry yesterday reported a 3% drop in sales of cars and light trucks in December, according to Autodata Corp., as housing woes and high fuel prices scared increasing numbers of consumers away from showrooms.

Laptop With Data Stolen? Announce It, Give 1-Year Free Credit ...

We've noted in the past that it's become somewhat standard for any company who has lost the private data of its customers/employees/partners/etc. to agonize for a little while and then offer one year of free credit monitoring as an apology. Apparently that formula has reached such a point that companies are doing it automatically. This way, the press can simply combine two stories into one. Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey loses a laptop with data on 30,000 members? No big deal. With the announcement they immediately offer a year of free credit monitoring and everyone can forget about it and move on. At this point, you have to assume that anyone storing personal data is starting to mentally price in the cost of a single year's free credit monitoring as a cost of doing business. It's certainly cheaper than actually securing your data.

Howard slams workplace U-turn

JOHN HOWARD has taken aim at his party and the Rudd Government over the winding back of his Work Choices legislation, calling it a "mistake" that would injure the economy.

In an hour-long speech to the neoconservative think tank the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, his first significant public address since losing office, the former prime minister touched on many of his favourite themes - the rise of "Islamic fascism" in the world, China's role, the culture wars, the importance of the traditional family, choice in education and the liberal media - as well as some more surprising ones, including an attack on the Archbishop of Canterbury.

But his most bitter remarks were reserved for those seeking to unwind his Work Choices legislation, which many believe cost the Coalition the election.

A blog about technology from BBC News

I am sick of stating my views on anti-piracy "activists". the fact is that the internet is changing the world and if a business wants to compete suing the customers is a bad idea. if you don't want me to download something, convince me to buy it.

Wikipedia, Google, Israel And Free Speech

But now something very new and exciting is taking shape for those seeking answers to life's many questions. It's called Wikipedia. Wikipedia or Wiki as many refer to it as is a free encyclopedia on the Internet. The largest of it's kind which has gathered such potency that when performing a Google search today on almost any popular topic, a Wikipedia link will most likely appear on the first page.

Wiki has an abundance of articles on far more subjects in many more languages than Encyclopedia Britannica or any other encyclopedia. But can you trust it? You see, the wiki part of the name is a tech term, meaning a web site that allows lots of people to contribute: creating, changing, or erasing information. Not all of these people who edit Wikipedia are professional editors nor are they thoroughly objective and balanced in their editing and research skills.

Carias went ahead and filed the criminal charge in Fulton County Magistrate Court against me and then filed civil complaints in Superior Court of Fulton County, GA against the company for 'negligent hiring' and harassment and invasion of privacy."

He said he was willing to agree in writing never to talk on air about Yogi and Panda ever again "for the sake of company harmony." He said he had no real problem with them, that "they serve their audience well and deliver good ratings numbers and revenue."

In the end, Wachs said, "A case of a humorous prank has turned into a culture clash, a suppression of 1st Amendment rights, and a ridiculous smear campaign against me as well as termination of my income without due process."
