Fast rail offering hip personalised travel

E-TICKETS, on-board DVD rentals, events, and even new encounters – French rail's new iDTGV trains are testing a new way of travel.

Music blares from a speaker in a bustling bar and conversations get louder as customers just out of Paris meetings trickle in, settle down and order drinks.

The barman hands over a beer, spilling a little as the brightly-coloured buffet car on the top deck of a customised high-speed TGV train rolls into its three-hour journey to the Mediterranean port city of Marseille.

Joined to a regular TGV train, this iDTGV, playing on the French word "idee" or "idea", is operated privately, but owned by the national SNCF rail company and designed as a laboratory for future rail travel.

Planned party train on the way

The iDTGV was launched in December 2004 and offers cheaper tickets, internet reservations, and services aimed at pleasing passengers, including a soon-to-be launched party train, to help the SNCF better compete with low cost airlines.

GM Exec Stands by Calling Global Warming a “Total Crock of Shit”

As part of a campaign against higher fuel economy standards, Lutz wrote in a 2006 blog posting that forcing automakers to sell smaller cars would be "like trying to address the obesity problem in this country by forcing clothing manufacturers to sell smaller, tighter sizes."

Automakers ended their opposition to higher fuel standards in 2007 when it became clear that proposed changes would become law with or without their support.

In December, President George W. Bush signed a law mandating a 40 percent increase in fleetwide fuel economy by 2020, the first substantial change in three decades.

Turnbull is a team player - Nelson

OPPOSITION Leader Brendan Nelson says he is unperturbed that Malcolm Turnbull has refused to rule out a leadership challenge.

When asked today if he was concerned about the treasury spokesmen's latest refusal to rule out a challenge, Dr Nelson replied: "No, of course not." Dr Nelson said the Coalition was working hard together. "We are a team, we're working very hard to make sure that the government is kept up to the plate," he said."We've already commenced the process of developing policies for the alternative government of Australia and every one of us is determined to make sure that the government delivers on the expectations that it set." Dr Nelson said Mr Turnbull was doing a terrific job keeping Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan awake at night. "It's obvious even in the relatively early days of the government Mr Swan is struggling being the treasurer of Australia," he said. .

Flipping for pizza

New York: Crust may be tossed. Crust must be thin enough to fold in half before eating. Diehards look for a trail of yellow oil (from whole milk mozzarella) from hand to elbow. Thin sauce instead of fresh tomatoes. Few toppings. Examples: White Pizza or Meatball Pizza.

Chicago: Deep-dish. Cornmeal is added to dough. Biscuit-like crust. Dough is pressed into pan. Filled with cheese, then toppings, then sauce. Need fork and knife to eat it. Originated in 1943 at Pizzeria Uno, which is still open. Sausage and spinach flavours most popular. At Uno, the server says this combo made them famous: cheese, sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, onions, green peppers. It is as thick as a quiche and as heavy as a doorstop.

California: "Gourmet" pizzas. Non-traditional ingredients, such as barbecued chicken, or pineapple and ham.

LTO sets sights on dirty, dilapidated cars

After cracking the whip on fixers, newly installed Land Transportation Offices (LTO) chief Alberto Suansing is setting his sights on dilapidated and dirty vehicles cruising on major highways across the country.

Suansing said he has directed LTO law enforcers to apprehend and issue citation tickets to drivers of dirty, dilapidated and unsightly vehicles traveling on major highways.

Aside from the decrepit vehicles, the LTO is also targeting vehicles with unauthorized commemorative plates, sirens and other illegal attachments.

According to an LTO insider, some motorists driving rundown cars take the risk of venturing onto highways since the fine is only P150, the same amount imposed for reckless driving, illegal overtaking, and illegal parking.

The source said dilapidated vehicles pose a "major problem" since if one conks out on a busy thoroughfare such as EDSA, it could trigger massive traffic jams

Some local government units that have enacted their own local traffic management code and impose a penalty of P500 or more if the motorist committed the offense in their area of jurisdiction.

Five people, gunman killed in shooting at NIU lecture hall

A former Northern Illinois University student opened fire at the DeKalb campus Thursday and then shot himself, leaving six dead and 15 wounded.

At least two of the victims are from our area: Ryanne Mace, 19, of Carpentersville, and Daniel Parmenter, 20, of Elmhurst. Two other victims identifed by DeKalb County Coroner Dennis J. Miller are Catalina Garcia, 20, of Cicero and Julianna Gehant, 32, of Meridan.

The shooter had been a graduate student in sociology at NIU in the spring of 2007, but was not currently enrolled there. The gunman, whom police did not identify, had had no contact with DeKalb police, NIU President John G. Peters said.

The classroom instructor was identified today as graduate student Joseph Peterson, who suffered a shoulder wound in the attack.

Students in the classroom say a skinny man clad in black and holding a shotgun burst into class shortly after 3 p.m.
