Consumers expect to spend up to $600,000 on such things as travel, luxury items, and second homes during retirement, according to a survey by the US division of Sun Life Financial Inc. in Wellesley. Headquartered in Canada, Sun Life provides a wide range of financial services, including retirement products. Titled "The Expense Reality," the survey reveals that while today's retirees are experiencing higher than anticipated expenses, they do not plan on reducing spending on desired activities. "Our research shows most boomers and current retirees know what opportunities they want to explore and what obligations are likely to arise, but do not have a realistic idea of the associated costs," Mary Fay, a Sun Life senior vice president, said in a statement."No one can predict precisely how much income they will need at any given stage in life, which is why retirement income solutions that are flexible and protect against unpredictable and unavoidable factors are so valuable." The report, the company said, is available at this link.

Participants were also edified on the key principles to be applied in organizing a disaster site and to understand the basics of hurricane impact, terrorism response, radio communications, incident command system, supply management and handling stress management in disasters.
Allegiant sees profits at Mesa airport
The parent company of Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport's largest commercial airlines posted a fourth-quarter profit despite rising fuel prices plaguing the industry. The news comes as further evidence of the demand for discount service that the niche market carrier provides to cities not served by majors, said Martin Whalen, a Mesa aviation lawyer and bank executive. Though Allegiant Travel Company didn't post earnings and losses for Allegiant Air's operations at the Mesa-based airport, company spokeswoman Tyri Squyres said Allegiant "is obviously happy with selecting Phoenix-Mesa as a destination base and looks forward to growing it." .
Rifts rise on Mt. Baldy
MT. BALDY VILLAGE - Missy and Ron Ellingson admit their six-cabin Mt. Baldy Lodge is a cash cow when a foot of snow falls. But the hordes of visitors revolving in and out of the lodge's restaurant on stormy weekends has its down side. In a town of about 500, the Ellingsons are just one business couple out of a handful of restaurant and motel owners who stay in touch with each other but don't necessarily work side by side to attract tourists. In fact, there's a subtle tension you wouldn't notice unless you're overly curious. Whatever their differences, business owners say summertime hikers from all over Southern California are finally becoming more of a mainstay at lodges in the San Antonio Canyon. Summer business is usually sluggish. Ironically, it's winter's massive snowfalls that bring seasonal difficulties to the Ellingons' doorstep - not the Mt.

CIVIC PRIDE: Glasgow's Lady Provost Sheena Duncan. Picture: James ...
You don't apply for it and nobody takes up references on you for it. My job is secondary to what the Lord Provost's agenda is, and I'm very happy for that to be the case: it's the way it should be. I wasn't elected - Bob was elected first by the people of Summerston, then by the Labour group and lastly by Glasgow City Council. That's a democratic process which I respect very much." This warm and charismatic woman - who prefers informality and introduces herself as Sheena - is quick to point out, however, that while she has a clear role to play as Lady Provost, she is still "independent in life, in thought and in mind" and is very active in her own field. "I don't sit about waiting for things to happen with the Lord Provost. I have a very busy agenda of my own," she says with a smile.
Why Cisco Is a Buy
Back in November, 2007, the company warned that spending on its networking gear was slowing down and could hurt growth for this market. On Feb. 6, Cisco indicated the situation hadn't improved (BusinessWeek.com, 2/7/08), and lowered its sales outlook for the current quarter ending in April. In turn, the stock has dropped 14% this year, to $23.20. Despite the news, which caused a deep sell-off in many technology stocks, Ari Bensinger at Standard & Poor's Equity Research kept a buy recommendation on Cisco shares. "We believe investors need to look at the larger picture—the long-term growth drivers for the company," he says. Plus, the recent drop makes Cisco's stock attractive, Bensinger says. It's trading at 16 times estimated 2008 earnings—the low end of its historical valuation range.
