| In Uruguay, Old-World Charm, Old-World Prices
As trade faded, Colonia became a backwater, which helps account for its fixed-in-amber charm. Today a community of 22,000, Colonia is 150 miles northwest of Montevideo, Uruguay's capital and largest city. It is an hour from Buenos Aires by river ferry, which is how many international visitors come to town. Colonia's location makes it a perfect day-trip. Some Buenos Aires hotels will book passage on the ferry for guests -- as did the hotel my wife and I stayed at, the Buenos Aires Four Seasons, a modern hotel ensconced in a beautifully renovated 1920 mansion. A round-trip first-class ticket on a hydrofoil operated by Ferry Lineas costs 250 Argentinean pesos, or about $80; standard tickets run about $36. Candidly, getting there is not half the fun. Travelers depart Buenos Aires from an aged red-brick waterside building with broken windows, roosting pigeons and fairly sizable shrubs sprouting from the roof.
Year in review 2007: Local government
February — Krum overhauls old utilities infrastructure Five city contractors undertook a massive overhaul of Krum's oldest infrastructure, removing lift stations, laying new water and sewer lines and rebuilding roads. The three-year project came together as planned, the City Council said. But council members also said they were frustrated at the lack of communication between the city and the residents, and some residents shared evidence of new water lines that leaked and others reported sewage backing up into homes or yards. Feb. 27 — Argyle council OKs proposal for two new projects The Argyle Town Council unanimously approved issuing the request for proposals to develop Argyle Town Center and Creeks of Argyle. Both projects had been progressing slowly, in part because the council was concerned about the high number of houses proposed in both projects.
Atlanta Music Scene
During a set that included her unusual takes on classic such as "Dark End of the Street," "Tracks of My Tears" and Patsy Cline's "She's Got You," she seemed both playful and sultry, bouncing around in her bare feet. Her throaty voice made the wide open spaces feel much more intimate, and the relatively small but attentive audience welcomed Marshall's own songs (including "Lived in Bars" and "The Greatest," both from her most recent album) with the loudest approval. Students catch on to Lacrosse
No students have been hurt in this activity; in fact, Colin said the first thing they ordered were goggles for the goalies. Junior high level students are encouraged to participate in several other traditional sports, like baseball and basketball, but Colin said the unique games bring out the best in everyone. "I think the more unique games are what the students get into because there's such a vast difference in ability in the traditional sports," she said. "They seem to have more fun in these different games." The students' reactions to the game were enthusiastic. "It's easy," said Kourtney Richardson. "It's fun because you're trying to get the ball," said Lauren Friedrich. "It's competitive. I think that's why everyone likes it because they can show what they got." Rajan Thrasher liked the competitive elements of the game, and Tasha Jones called it "awesome." "It's fun because you get to throw stuff," said Taylor Anderson.
